As most of you know, I've spent the last two years traipsing across the globe in an effort to scratch my insatiable traveler's itch and it has been, without question, the BEST two years of my life. I sincerely appreciate all of the enthusiasm and support from all of you as I have pursued my dreams of seeing and experiencing the world. My NY-based family and friends, you have wistfully told me how much you would have loved to join me on my journey if only money/time/responsibility was not an impediment. Well, EUREKA!, I finally figured out a way to make it happen!
Simply put, the blog title says it all. My next adventure is to go around the world in eighty days (roughly the length of the summer) without leaving NY. Since I returned from Central America in March, I have been lamenting the lack of a new adventure on my horizon. And then it occurred to me that I have one of the world's biggest melting pots of people, cuisine and culture in my backyard. I'm not talking about having dinner in prosaic Little Italy, Chinatown and Curry Hill or at the trendy new Nuevo Latino Filipino Organic Vegan Raw Food place on 10th St. There are plenty of people who have already covered that. I mean hopping on a subway and venturing out to (gasp!) another borough and bringing a traveler's enthusiasm to exploring the nooks and crannies of the outer reaches of my own city. I want to try things like Dominican, West African, Guayanese food in the neighborhood where people who emigrated from those places imbue the food and atmosphere with the authenticity of trying to create a bit of home away from home. I am getting excited just thinking about it!
So, there is an open invitation to all of you to join me, whether it is by coming with me on one of my field trips or just following along on the blog. By the way, if you have suggestions on restaurants to try or neighborhoods to visit, please pass them along!
